Communication- and road history

Look forward to an unforgettable historic train ride with the historic Flåm railway or experience the fascinating historical roads in Lærdal, such as King's Road over Filefjell, "... the most dangerous road that exists in this country" - said Bishop Pontoppidan after a journey through Lærdal in 1749. Easy to find over the E-16, approx. 4 km west (direction Lærdal) from Borgund stave church, or approx. 20 km from the holiday park, follow the signs with "Historical route".

King's Road

Since man began to settle in the country, Filefjell has been the most used road between east and west in southern Norway. From the Middle Ages we know the many royal journeys over Filefjell, and the old saga kings rode over here. The road has been rerouted and changed several times as it was among the most difficult and dangerous routes in the country. Starting in Oslo, it continues to Hønefoss and Valdres, and over Filefjell. On the west side of the mountain, the road ends at Lærdalsøyri. If one follows the old route further, it will be by boat to Bergen. A 10- mile hiking trail has been established along King's road. It runs between Vang in Valdres in the east, and Lærdalsøyri in the west. The road has changed its name first from Bergenske hovudvej, then to Riksveg 60, then E 68, and to this day E 16. Not only does this route take you through some of the beautiful landscape in Norway, but with the purchase you get an indescribable journey in the story. In 2017, King's road over Filefjell recieved the EU's most important cultural heritage award, the Europa Nostra award. In addition King's road came second in the voting for the big audience award, where people from all over Europe participated. In 2015, King's road over Filefjell received the "Road Director's Award", also known as the "Beautiful Road Award".

Lærdal tunnel

About 6 km from the holiday park, lies the world's longest road tunnel. 24, 509 m of road, with 3 seperate and illuminated halls, which should give the impression of sunrise and being outside in daylight. The design of the tunnel takes into account the psychological strain it can be on the drivers to drive through the mountain, which takes around 20 minutes. The Lærdal tunnel was the last link in a winter-safe connection between Oslo and Bergen. A tunnel out of the ordinary: with high popularity for taking pictures in the middle of the mountain.

Flåm railway

From the high mountain station Myrdal on the Bergensbana, down to Flåm station, deep in the Aurlandsfjord. Flåm railway is one of the world's steepest railway sections on normal tracks. The 20 m long section has a difference in height of a whopping 866 m, which gives a rise of one meter per 18 m. This incredible train journey is probably one of Norway's most popular and spectacular tourist attractions, and in 2014 was voted the world's most beautiful train journey by the Lonely Planet. A trip on the railway can be combined with a walk or a bike ride along Rallarvegen.

The snow road

The popular snow road runs over Aurlandsmountain. It was opened in 1967, and the start of the road as it is today was a construction road. The road runs from Lærdalsøyri to Aurlandsvangen over the mountain and has a peak of 1306 meters above sea level. The road is closed in winter, and in summer there is still a lot of snow in the mountains, hence the name. A fantasic drive in exciting surroundings, which you will soon forget. And if desired, it can be made into a round trip and take the Lærdal tunnel back.

National tourist routes

Two roads in Sogn and Fjordane have the status of national tourist road. County road 55 from Fossbergom in Lom to Gaupne in Luster, forms the National Tourist Road Sognefjellet. Fylkesroad 258 over Strynefjellet constitutes the National Tourist Road in Old Strynefjellsroad.
