King's Road over Filefjell
The 10-mile long hiking route King's Road over Filefjell takes you through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Norway. From the villages of Valdres via Filefjell and down the narrow and dramatic fjord landscape at the heart of the Sognefjord. King's Road over Filefjell has won the prestigious Europa Nostra Grand Prix (2017) and Vakre Vegars Pris (2015). In February, arrangements were also made to ski parts of the King's Road over Filefjell.
King's Road between Oslo and Bergen was built through Valdres at the end of the 18th century, with simple tools at a time when dynamite had not yet been invented. This used to be the most important route between east and west. Today, many parts of this historic road have become popular hiking trails, either by foot or by bike. King's Road over Filefjell is one of Norway's finest architectural heritages.
The route goes from the narrow, dramatic fjord landscape deep in the Sognefjord over Filefjell and down to the villages in Valdres. For walkers, the trip is both interesting and filled with many memorable experiences along the way. The beautiful cultural landscape, the spectacular mountains and the great attractions are waiting to be explored.
